Ephedrine Sulfate Injection Indications

Indications

As a pressor agent, particularly during spinal anesthesia when hypotension frequently occurs.

Ephedrine Sulfate Injection Dosage and Administration

Adult

25–50mg by SC or IM; or 5–25mg by slow IV, may be repeated in 5–10 minutes if necessary.

Children

0.5mg/kg by SC or IM every 4–6 hours.

Warnings/Precautions

Heart disease. Angina. Diabetes. Hyperthyroidism. Prostatic hypertrophy. Hypertension. Prolonged use may produce syndrome resembling anxiety. Tolerance may develop; discontinuing may restore effectiveness. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers: not recommended.

Interactions

MAOIs during or within 14 days: avoid. Concomitant general anesthetics (eg. cyclopropane, halogenated hydrocarbons), digitalis glycosides may cause cardiac arrhythmias. May inhibit hypotensive effect of guanethidine, bethanidine, debrisoquin. Severe hypertension with concomitant oxytocics.

Adverse Reactions

Nervousness, insomnia, vertigo, headache, tachycardia, palpitation, sweating, GI upset, anorexia, vesical sphincter spasm, urinary retention, precordial pain, cardiac arrhythmias.
